Mount Isa adopts a green thumb

Over $400,000 will be spent on upgrading recreational facilities in Mount Isa.

Six local organisations will share in the 'Greening Mount Isa' program, which has been designed to help the local community deliver projects that help minimise the impact of dust in recreational areas and children's playgrounds.

The funding will help local sporting associations and the Mount Isa City Council install sustainable irrigation and watering systems.

Mount Isa City Council has also received funding to refurbish two irrigation systems, purchase new trees and install 20 new benches in parks.

The organisations to receive funding were:

- Mount Isa Rugby League: $95,318 to purchase an automated watering system
- North West Queensland Soccer: $69,902 to purchase four mobile irrigation systems and spectator benches
- Mount Isa Softball Association: $84,542 to purchase an irrigation system, bore pump, water wise garden, shade structures and seating
- Mount Isa Touch Association: $59,947 to equip Kruttschnitt Oval with a sustainable watering system
- AFL Mount Isa: $49,280 to purchase an irrigation system
- Mount Isa City Council: $41,473 to upgrade two irrigation systems, purchase new trees and provide 20 new benches in local parks
