A new National Park will be created to protect 42,000 hectares of red gum forests in the Riverina district.
The national park will take in the Gulpa Island, Millewa and Moira state forests.
The Wilderness Society says the Millewa Forest group forms part of the worlds’ largest River Red Gum Forest and has huge conservation significance and provides crucial habitat for iconic species such as koala, superb parrot and barking owls.
It says the forests of the region suffer from extreme water stress, with up to 75 per cemt of the trees stressed, dead or dying. They have been further degraded by the combined pressures of industrial logging and grazing.
