The City of Joondalup is monitoring and reducing its groundwater use for irrigation.
The City is one of the first metro local governments to install water meters on all of its bores to ensure accurate recording and to keep track of water use.
"The City’s Landscape Master Plan aims to reduce water usage and improve irrigation efficiency at local parks, sporting ovals and reserves," acting CEO Jamie Parry says.
"The introduction of hydrozoning is one of the practices which have recently been implemented." Hydrozoning involves irrigating areas of the City’s parks and ovals differently depending on the use of the park.
These reductions will apply to all irrigated areas within the City.
"The City is closely monitoring all its parks, which will be ongoing to assess the effect of the modified water reduction strategies," Parry says.
"Reduced water use in verges and medians allows for water resources to be concentrated on areas that have greater community benefit, like playing fields and public open space.
"A key initiative of the City’s Landscape Master Plan is guidelines for the development of verges and median treatments, which incorporates native and waterwise landscaping."
All local governments have a restricted allocation of groundwater they can use every year which is regulated by the Department of Water (DoW) to ensure WA water resources are adequately maintained.
