THE SUSTAINABLE Sites Initiative has announced a 5 November call for pilot projects which will test US’s first national rating system for sustainable landscapes.

According to the Initiative, it will accept applications starting 5 November 2009 and close 15 February 2010, in conjunction with the release of the next report and new rating system. Around 75 to 150 projects will take part in testing the rating system.

The Initiative says any type of designed landscape is eligible to participate so long as the total size exceeds 185.8 square meters. Landscape projects can range from academic and corporate campuses, parks and recreation areas, transportation corridors to single residences.

The Sustainable Sites Initiative says it is a partnership between the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and the US Botanic Garden.

The Initiative is said to have been formed to create guidelines and performance benchmarks for sustainable landscapes, with or without buildings.
