WESTERN Australian Minister for Water, Graham Jacobs says the State Government has decided in principle to a total sprinkler ban from next winter in 2010.

According to the Minister, the trial ban saved more than 50 million litres of water a day in two months, effectively around 22 Olympic swimming pools daily. This was directly attributable to the ban and resulted in overall saving of 2.2 billion litres for the period.

The Minister says the assessment would be reached soon and a total ban is expected to apply from 1 June until 31 August 31.

Jacobs says he told a water summit held on 9 September there was no doubt that the two-month trial ban had been a major success. Additionally, 93% of the community supported the trail, as indicated in an independent survey taken late-August.

The water summit is said to have been jointly convened by the Water Corporation and Department of Water and included representatives of the nursery, horticultural, turf growing, bore manufacturing, lawn mowing, landscaping, and reticulation sales and installation industries.
