IN PREPARATION of the 2010 Taipei International Gardening and Horticulture Exposition, the greening of the Chengkung Market roof has just been completed.
According to the Taipei City Department of Economic Development, the one-month roof greening project was completed on 13 September with a budget of around NT$2.4m (A$85,100).
The Department says the greening project is the largest-scale landscape gardening project ever in Taiwan to date. The project included covering 1,807 square meters of the Chengkung Market roof with such drought-resistant plants as crown of thorn, rose moss and spiderwort.
The green roof project will lower the temperature inside the market from 40 to 32 degrees Fahrenheit in summer.
The engineers are said to have chosen crown of thorn and other drought-resistant plants to decrease the frequency of trimming and management, covering the roof with a thin layer of plants for environment-friendly urban greening.
