The City of Sydney will reopen a disused historic community building located in Prince Alfred Park, Redfern, as part of a revitalisation of the park.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said the local communities of Redfern and Surry Hills helped the City refine and revise plans for the park.
"With the help of the local community we have arrived at a set of designs that will enhance and beautify the park's natural character while improving sporting facilities in the park," she says.
"The City's landscaping works to the park are already underway. We are also investigating options for a trigeneration plant at the park as part of Sustainable Sydney 2030 to turn natural gas into electricity to power the pool buildings and park lights while using the waste heat produced to heat the pool water."
The plans for the Coronation Centre include:
- retaining the original building
- removing unsightly later additions to the building
- refurbishment of the internal layout
- new toilet and change facilities for community use
Landscape works currently underway include planting new trees, the construction of new paths and entrances, more open grassed areas, improved lighting, a new playground, fitness equipment, revitalisation of the existing tennis courts and relocating the sports facilities.
