WESTERN Australian Attorney-General, Christian Porter says the Liberal-National Government has doubled the penalties for people who deface public and private property with graffiti.
According to the Attorney-General, under the new laws offenders will face double the maximum time in prison, from one year to two years, and double the maximum fine from $12,000 to $24,000.
In addition to this, it is now an offence for retailers to sell graffiti implements such as spray cans to children, with maximum penalties of $6,000 for a first offence and $12,000 for subsequent offences.
Porter says graffiti defacing the urban landscape costs the State and local governments $25m a year to clean up and remove. Between 2003-04 and 2007-08 graffiti increased by more than 30% in WA.
