An initial draft urban design study for Harold Park in Glebe, Sydney, is being presented to the community as part of the City of Sydney's development of planning controls for the future of the site.
Harness Racing NSW is selling its historic inner city paceway and is requesting that the site, currently designated as open space with limited public access, be rezoned.
The draft urban design study proposes publicly accessible open space connecting with the Glebe foreshore and Jubilee Park, preserving existing native habitats and medium density housing with some supporting retail.
The heritage listed former tramsheds will be restored for community use, such as markets. To integrate the site into the surrounding residential areas, street connections and street vistas are proposed and linked cycle routes and pedestrian paths are planned.
Key elements of the draft study include a cliff edge park linking the site and surrounding areas to Jubilee Park, Johnston's Creek and the Light Rail green corridor which would create spaces for a range of recreational outdoor activities and encourage conservation of a local fairy wren habitat.
There are pedestrian access routes and cycle paths linking to the city's 200 km cycling network currently under construction.
