Perry Park to be become a sports facility

Perry Park in Alexandria, Sydney, is set to become a regional sports facility.

The City of Sydney has endorsed a feasibility study into the revitalisation of the park, which is currently an area of flat land along Shea's Creek.

The City of Sydney Basketball Association currently has a perpetual lease of one-tenth of Perry Park, containing Alexandria Basketball Stadium, with two basketball courts and associated facilities.

"The City of Sydney's Open Space Study and Recreational Needs Study identified the opportunity to develop Perry Park as an active sports precinct. The City appointed consultants to investigate the feasibility of a multi-purpose synthetic field; review the City of Sydney Basketball Association development proposal; undertake community consultation; and prepare a concept master plan for Perry Park," said Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP.

The feasibility study has concluded:

- there is a need for a multi-purpose synthetic field suitable for hockey, which would fit in the park, and Glebe and UTS Hockey Clubs could then use the park as their home ground
- change rooms and club facilities could be  included in the improvement works
- a crèche, multi-purpose indoor courts and gym that could be built as part of the  redevelopment of basketball facility in the park by the City of Sydney Basketball Association
- a kiosk, public toilets, a playground, new trees, seating, lighting and landscaping would improve the park

The City of Sydney Council will consider the feasibility study into the future use of the park at its meeting November 23.

Subject to their endorsement, concept designs for the project will be prepared for consultation in early 2010.
