Queensland scientists researching for golf green to suit Australian conditions

QUEENSLAND Minister for Primary Industries, Fisheries, Tim Mulherin says the States scientists are researching how to make the perfect golf green for Australian conditions.

According to the Minister, the move for research of Australian designed courses comes from the fact most golf greens are constructed to the US Golf Association standard which have been used worldwide for decades.

The Minister says adhering to the US standards for Australian course construction is expensive to develop, re-surface and maintain. The research will help to improve the quality of golf courses throughout Australia.

Turf grass is said to be a big business in Australia as 2006 figures put the value of the industry at around $235m with almost 5,000 hectares of turf grass under production.

Mulherin says the Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries (QPIF) Redlands Research Centre has constructed a purpose-built golf green to ascertain the find the best possible surface for the 1,500 plus golf courses across the nation.

QPIF is said to have analysed nine different types of greens quality grasses, including Cynodon hybrid and seashore paspalum over the past three years.
