A Morinish resident in Queensland has been fined $90,000 for clearing 274.5 hectares of native vegetation from his property, Spear Creek, in around 2004 or 2005.
Bruce Henderson was charged for clearing native vegetation without obtaining the relevant development permit.
He pleaded guilty to the charge in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court in November, 2009. A conviction was not recorded.
Department of Environment and Resource Management, assistant director-general for Environment and Natural Resource Regulation, Dean Ellwood, said people should ensure they have all the correct permits before clearing trees and vegetation.
"This is a timely reminder for people clearing their land to increase grazing area to check that they aren’t clearing native vegetation," Ellwood says.
"Native vegetation may be protected under legislation and permits are required if clearing is being undertaken."
