TURNER Construction says it has completed New York City's largest green roof for the United States Postal Service (USPS) atop the Morgan Mail Processing Facility.
According to Turner, one of the nation's largest green builders, the 2.5 acre green roof atop the 50.5 acre facility is part of the USPS's greener facilities strategy. It will help the agency achieve its goal of reducing energy use by 30% by 2015.
Turner says the scope of the landscaping work included the installation of plants and grasses and fourteen wood benches made from lumber certified sustainable by the Forest Stewardship Council.
The roof will reduce storm water runoff and is said to save the USPS US$30,000 (A$35,890) each year on heating and cooling costs.
Turner Construction says green retrofits of existing facilities are an important component of its client's Green building programs.
