VICTORIAN Minister for Sport Recreation and Youth Affairs, James Merlino says the States youth joined forces by planting a tree to mark UN International Youth Day 2009.
According to the Minister, students from Heatherwood School and Collingwood College joined forces in Collingwood on 12 August. The theme for the 2009 Youth Day was about the sustainability of our society, our economy and our environment.
The Minister says the aforementioned schools were two of 400 Victorian schools taking part in the State Government’s $4m Advance program, which supports young people to volunteer in their local communities.
Heatherwood students are said to have constructed a wall along the banks of the Yarra River to prevent soil erosion, while Collingwood College planted native trees and shrubs along the river to re-establish the growth and vegetation of native plants in the area.
