Victorians are being asked to comment on proposed regulations which aim to provide for recreational use of state forests and parks with a sustainable impact.
Victorians can make a submission to the proposed Forests (Recreation) Regulations 2010 until 5 pm on March 4, 2010.
The new regulations will help the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) to manage the areas and aim to maximise the use of the state's forests, forest reserves and forest parks for recreation while protecting their conservation values and reducing risks to the community.
"The regulations will allow better management to enhance the environment as well as protecting water quality especially in the forest reserves that form part of Melbourne’s Water supply catchments," says executive director of forests and parks, Dr Peter Appleford.
"Bushwalkers, for example, will still have access to these forest reserves, through designated walking tracks within the Yarra Tributaries catchments. However to reduce risks to water quality, walkers could face a fine under the proposed regulations if they leave the tracks."
The new regulations aim to modernise and simplify existing regulations while keeping their general intent.
