Waverly Council cleans up

Waverley Council has won three environmental awards for reducing waste, increasing recycling and saving water along the coastline.

The Bronte Gully Stormwater Harvesting project won the Water Conservation category in the Local Government and Shires Association Excellence in the Environment Awards.

It also won both the State and Regional WSN Resource Recovery Awards, a category of the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Clean Beach Challenge, in recognition of waste reduction achievements in the ‘Lovin’ My Bondi Beach’ campaign.

The Bronte system has been designed to capture and use the stormwater from the gully that would otherwise go straight to sea. It is stored in a 120kL underground tank and then treated via backwash filtration and UV disinfection.

The treated water is used for irrigation of the park, the amenities blocks, cleaning of Bronte pool and by Bronte Bushcare.

Over the past 12 months, the system has harvested and re-used over 11 million litres of stormwater, meaning a 73 per cent reduction in water use over the year.
